The level of collections remains stable compared to 2010

The first estimate of SACEM collections for 2011 is €820.5m. It is a stable result (up 0.1%) compared to collections in 2010 (€819.6m).

“We are all the more satisfied by this result as we expected decreased collections in 2011, since in 2010 we had known exceptional back claims in the media sector”
, underlines Bernard Miyet, CEO of SACEM.

Trends by sector

Media (radio/television) resisted well. Collections for that sector amount to €318m (up 0.2%). In the television sector where collections slightly fell by 0.4%, “traditional” TV channels are slowing down in favour of more recent operators. Rights from radios are up (+6,3%) thanks to the dynamism of this sector and to some back claims.

Revenues from general rights are stable with an amount of €266,3m. Collections from broadcast of music in public places grew slightly (+0.4%). Rights from discotheques went up (+6.3%), as well as rights from cinemas (+1.7%), thanks in part to the success of the movie “Intouchables” at the end of the year. On the other hand, the live music sector experienced a decline (-3.7%) for the second consecutive year.

The phonograph-video (physical products) sector continues to decrease (-14%), analogous to the market decline, reaching €84.1m.

Revenue from private copy dropped 6% to €53.8m, which can be explained by a very rough year 2011 and in particular by rights held in reserve after the decision of the French Conseil d’Etat on June 17, 2011.

Collections from abroad increased 8.1% to €80m.
NB: collections for 2011 in this sector concern exploitation in 2010.

A near threefold increase in results from the Internet

Collections for the Internet/multimedia sector amount to €18.3m, up 178% compared to 2010 (€6.6m), which can be partly explained by the progression of the online music market, but also by many back claims with major French and European services.

“The Internet now represents 2.2% of our overall collections,”
comments Bernard Miyet. “Negotiations for signing licenses, as well as collection and payment of rights in this sector have become more complex due to the fragmentation of repertoires. It explains the non linear nature of our collections results coming from online services.”
