If you are:

  • a composer of variety music, instrumental works
  • an author of songs, poems, sketches
  • an author and director
You must:
  • have composed or written at least 5 works
  • prove that exploitation has begun for one of these works:
  • either by public diffusion of one or more works performed 5 times in 5 different sessions over a period of over 6 months. In this case, you must include with your application form the broadcast certificates drawn up at your request by the organisers of performances, radio stations, television channels… that diffused your works.
  • or by the recording of at last one work on a record, CD, multimedia device or video sold in shops. Please enclose a copy.
  • return, with the registration forms (provided by SACEM), the manuscripts of your works: complete score, i.e. melody and harmonisation or a sound recording, plus the lyrics for a song.

Once the requisite documents have been collected your application is submitted to the Board of Directors for decision.
After acceptance of your application, you will become a member when the signed proxies have been returned with a cheque for the amount of the admission fee (124€ in 2012).
Then your membership card will be sent to you.

Special cases

Member of a group
  • Admission is always on an individual basis, even if you work in a group, although your works can be registered collectively.
  • Each work registration form must mention the name of each member of the group and signed by all of them. It is enough to list the name of the people forming the group and informing us of any changes in its composition.
  • Each member must file an individual application form.
Composer-improviser of jazz
  • If you improvise on stage on pre-existing themes, you must join Sacem beforehand as a composer.
  • To benefit in addition from the status of improviser for live music performances, you must file a request with the Membership Office.
  • You will be asked to file a recording of at least one of your improvisations for evaluation by the Composers’ Committee which will decide whether or not to grant you this status.
Composer of electronic music
The conditions of admission are the same as for a composer of variety music.
Composer of music for films, TV films, series, multimedia device (video games, CD-Rom...)
You must have composed the music for a marketed multimedia work or a film, a dramatic work, a series… exploited in cinema theatres or on television.

Enclose with the registration form:

  • the manuscript of your work (the complete score, i.e. the melody and harmonisation or a sound recording, plus the lyrics for a song),
  • cue sheets for musical sequences,
  • audiovisual specifications with the name of each theme and its duration; this can be filed only after final editing of the final version of the audiovisual work.

For multimedia works, enclose a copy of the mock-up.

Composer of classic music (symphonic, electro-acoustic, chamber music...)
It is enough to have composed at least one work, performed or broadcast once in public, and prove its exploitation by providing, with your application for admission, or a commercially sold recording of the work, or a broadcast certificate drawn up at your request by the organizer of the concert, radio station, television channel… that used your work.

Enclose with the registration form:

  • the symphonic or electro-acoustic work annex,
  • the manuscript of your work, the complete score, i.e. the melody and harmonisation or a sound recording with the complete lyrics on a sheet of paper.
Author of dubbing and subtitles
You must have written the dubbing or subtitles of at least one film, TV film or series, and prove its exploitation by providing a broadcast certificate drawn up at your request by the television channel, or the copy of a television programme, and a certification from the dubbing company.

Enclose with the specific registration form the text of your dubbing or subtitles.
Foreign nationals
Enclose with your application:

  • a photocopy of your passport identification page (if you live in France, a photocopy of your residence permit, since this document is indispensable for the payment of your royalties);
  • authorisation from the authors’ society of your country of origin (if it is not a member of the European Union).

Once these formalities have been satisfied, your admission dossier is submitted to the Board of Director, which decides whether or not to admit you. You become a SACEM member after signature of the membership forms and payment of an admission fee (€119 in 2009). A membership card will then be sent to you.
