Franco-American Cultural Fund

In March 1996, SACEM signed an agreement with two professional guilds in the United States representing audiovisual creators (Directors Guild of America - DGA; Writers Guild of America – WGA; joined by the Motion Picture Association of America - MPAA) to create together a Cultural Fund for the promotion and teaching of the art of cinema. This is how the Franco American Cultural Fund originated.

Funded in France by resources from private copy levies, the Fund implements on all French and American territory an original sponsoring policy, which has the specificity of organizing an ambitious artistic and educational program and supporting cultural projects through both consultancy and financial aid.

It has the mission to promote cinematographic creation and restoration on both sides of the Atlantic, encourage young talents and uphold dialog among professionals from both countries

Four main types of initiatives:

Training young professionals of cinema from both countries
In order to promote training and creation for young professionals of the cinema from both countries, the Fund organizes workshops for directors and scriptwriters with the help of French and American professionals, some in the context of Festivals, other through a Summer University for students from film schools or thanks to support from an exchange program for French and American students.

Encouraging better diffusion of French cinema in the United States
Thanks to the COL COA Los Angeles French Film Festival, which it founded in 1996 and its support for the FACE “Tournées” program, the Fund undertakes concrete actions to promote French films in the United States, encourage relations with American distributors and facilitate access to the North American market for many French filmmakers and producers.

Organizing professional meetings both in France and the United States
The Fund also engages in initiatives to create and reinforce opportunities for meetings between French and American professionals around their respective films and the concerns they often share, whether technical, artistic, political or cultural.

Restoring French and American films
The Fund aims to preserve both countries’ cinematographic heritage by restoring French films with the Cinémathèque Française, and American films with the Film Foundation, chaired by Martin Scorsese.
