The first non-English-language repertoire for export

With more than €80m collected abroad (via the 158 representation contracts signed with foreign CMOs) and an increase of 8% compared to 2010, and 24% since 2001, Sacem’s repertoire is the world’s third largest in terms of export (after the United-States’ and Great Britain’s). It represents the 1st non-English-language repertoire for export.

Great standards and young generations

The success of Sacem’s repertoire on the export market stems from the presence of great standards and the new vitality brought by a recent generation of creators in varied musical genres.

The success on the export market is partly built on songs which are now international standards such as La vie en rose (E.Piaf, L.Guy), La mer/Beyond the Sea (C.Trenet, A.Lasry), Comme d’habitude/My Way (C.François, J.Revaud, L.Thibaud), and on classical and contemporary music (Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud, Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns, Henri Dutilleux, Olivier Messiaen, Francis Poulenc, Chostakovitch, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov…).

In recent years, there has also been a renewal of the repertoire, thanks to the success of French creators of electronic music such as David Guetta, Frédéric Riesterer, Bob Sinclar, Air, Justice, David Vendetta, M83, Martin Solveig or recently DJ Snake (who worked in particular with Lady Gaga and Pitbull), the vitality of the “young French scene” (Zaz, Selah Sue, Yelle, Stromae, Hindi Zahra, Ben l’Oncle Soul, Yael Naïm, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Phoenix, Booba, Asa, M. Pokora, Tahiti 80…), and internationally renowned film music composers (Alexandre Desplat, Bruno Coulais, Ludovic Bource for The Artist…)

“With 163 nationalities represented among our 137 000 members and a huge variety of musical genres, from contemporary music to chanson, along with world music and film music, the strength of Sacem’s repertoire on the export market comes from its diversity and the talent of its members” emphasizes Bernard Miyet, CEO of SACEM.

Europe, the first territory for export

Europe remains the main territory for export of Sacem’s repertoire with more than €60m of rights collected, followed by North America (€8.1m) and Asia-Pacific (€7.8m).

The top ten importers of Sacem’s repertoire are Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands and Spain.
