Sacem (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers) and Creative Commons announce the signing of the first agreement with a collective society in France for non-commercial distribution of musical works.
The agreement, which took effect on January 1st 2012, will allow members of Sacem to promote their works in a non-commercial environment. It combines, in an innovative way, the use of non-commercial licenses offered by Creative Commons, and the methods of collection and distribution of Sacem. The experience will last for 18 months after which there will be an evaluation.

The authors, composers and music publishers members of Sacem now have the ability to opt, on the website of the latter, for each of the works of which they are right holders for one of three Non Commercial Creative Commons licenses:

Attribution - NonCommercial (CC BY-NC)
Attribution - NonCommercial - ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA)
Attribution - NonCommercial - NoDerivs(CC BY-NC-ND).

Bernard Miyet, President of Sacem’s Management board, points out :
“This agreement shows the willingness of Sacem to adapt to the practices of some of its members, particularly as regards digital uses. It's an advantage for authors, composers and publishers, who, if they wish to, can promote their works non-commercially in a defined legal framework, while retaining the possibility of receiving a fair and effective remuneration for the exploitation of their creations. I am proud to have reached this balanced agreement that meets the expectations of many creators.”

Paul Keller, Creative Commons Collective Societies Liaison, underlines :
“Creative Commons is happy to see Sacem allowing its members to make use of Creative Commons licenses. These licenses have been embraced by millions of Creators worldwide and starting today members of Sacem can use them to authorize non-commercial sharing and remixing of their works."
