Universal Music Publishing Group and SACEM via “D.E.A.L.” Sign Pan-European Agreement for Nokia Comes With Music Service
Through the agreement, SACEM licenses the use of the online rights owned and/or controlled by UMPG together with SACEM’s repertoire for use in the Nokia Comes With Music digital entertainment service. Nokia European customers who buy a Comes With Music device can explore and enjoy music from the world’s leading music publisher, Universal Music Publishing Group.
Upon making the announcement David Renzer, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group, commented: “It is our firm desire to see the legitimate European digital marketplace grow. This deal with Nokia, licensed via DEAL, our SACEM joint model for Pan European Rights, demonstrates our ability to license important users of our repertoire in an expedient manner and across many territories. We look forward to announcing several other major deals shortly.”
“As the leading global music publisher Universal Music Publishing Group is delighted to conclude this agreement with the world's number one mobile communications company,” added Andrew Jenkins, Executive Vice President, International, Universal Music Publishing Group. “This major deal, concluded via our Pan-European option, now named DEAL so quickly after it's launch, demonstrates the commitment of both organizations to the development of multi-territory licensing."
"Despite the uncertainties surrounding the organizations of rights owners and collecting societies in Europe, we are pleased to have closed a deal with Nokia. It is indeed very important to facilitate the growth of new online services within a respectful model for the rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers,” commented Bernard Miyet, CEO and Chairman of the SACEM Management Board. “SACEM has found in Nokia, a major player of the mobile industry, a company concerned with respecting the rights of authors, composers and publishers.”
"This agreement shows the commitment of Universal Music Publishing Group and SACEM to enabling innovative business models to flourish across Europe," said Liz Schimel, Global Head of Music, Nokia. "We look forward to expanding our Comes With Music offering to consumers across Europe and to provide them with access to a wide range of great content."
DEAL is a significant contribution to establishing a coherent and efficient model for the licensing and administration of online rights in Europe, allowing rights holders to control the administration of their rights and receive appropriate remuneration for the exploitation of their works while giving users the simple and secure access to protected works they require.
